Hawassa City anticipates increased tourist influx from corridor development

Addis Ababa, July 27, 2024 (FBC) – Hawassa City is poised for a surge in tourist arrivals following the recent commencement of corridor development projects, according to Mayor Mekuria Mereshaye.

In an interview with EPA, Mayor Mekuria emphasized that the newly launched corridor initiative in Hawassa, located in Sidama State, aims to enhance the city’s image and rejuvenate its tourism sector.

The development plan includes constructing roads, bike lanes, and walkways that are designed with accessibility for persons with disabilities in mind. “This project will not only beautify the city but also attract more visitors,” Mayor Mekuria stated.

He explained that the corridor development is focused on expanding infrastructure and promoting key areas within the city. The project encompasses the construction of 10 highways totaling 34.5 kilometers in length.

In addition to enhancing road infrastructure, the project prioritizes the installation of public toilets and fountains to maintain environmental cleanliness, the mayor noted.

The road improvements will stretch from Haile Resort, passing by Membo Cafe, Hawassa Referral Hospital, and Hawassa University, all the way to the Tikur Wuha area.

“The first phase of the corridor development is expected to be completed within three to four months. A feasibility study is currently underway for the second phase, which will require a budget of 2 billion Birr. Overall, a total investment of 3 billion Birr is needed, with a strong emphasis on public involvement and institutional contributions to realize the project,” Mekuria added.

Furthermore, local residents are actively supporting the corridor development through financial assistance, knowledge sharing, and moral support. This corridor initiative stands as one of the major projects spearheaded by the town administration.
