German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrives in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, May 4, 2023 (FBC) – German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has arrived in Addis Ababa for a two-day working visit to Ethiopia.
Upon his arrival at the Bole International Airport, Olaf Scholz was received by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Birtukan Ayano.
In his media briefing earlier today, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Meles Alem mentioned that German government officials, investors and leaders of institutions are members of the delegation that came to Ethiopia today.
A few days ago, the German Office of Press and and Information has issued an official statement which indicates the German Chancellor and his delegation is scheduled to visit both Ethiopia and Kenya from May 4 to 6, 2023.
It is said that during his stay in Ethiopia, Scholz will meet and consult with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, President Sahle-Work Zewde, head of Tigray region interim administration Getachew Reda, and other senior government officials. He is also expected to meet with the African Union Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
It is said that the scheduled meetings will focus on issues pertaining to climate change, economic cooperation, regional peace and cessation of the current conflict in Sudan.
German state media confirmed that this is Scholz’s second visit to Africa as head of government.
In his first visit to Africa since assuming his office, Olaf Scholz has visited other African countries; such as Niger, Senegal and South Africa 6 months after he came to power.
