GERD to play role of leapfrogging electric access for millions in East Africa: WIE Minister
Addis Ababa, June 4, 2021 (FBC) – The Water, Irrigation and Energy Minister, Dr. Seleshi Bekele and President of Oromia Regional State have inaugurated three Off-Grid electrification in Beltu, Bahima and Mino towns, Oromia region.
The Off-Grid system is aid to provide access to electricity to at least 27000 households in remotest places in East Bale and East Hararghe zones of Oromia Regional State.
On the occasion, the Minister of Water Irrigation and Energy (WIE), Dr. Seleshi Bekele said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will play the role of leapfrogging in electric access for 65 million people in Ethiopia and other millions in East Africa.
He noted that Ethiopia has also prioritized the Off-Grid solar electrification access in addition to the Grid system.
Ethiopia is set to boost the Off-Grid solar energy system in the next 5 years under “light for all” electrification program, the Minister said.
“These are 3 of 12 we have constructed in recent months at a total cost of 160 Million Birr. Construction of Off-Grid systems in 25 new sites in 9 regions will be commenced soon as second phase and 240 others in phase 3.
