GERD generated more than 2,700GWh of power in 10 months
Addis Ababa, June 5, 2024 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) today announced that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has surpassed its planned power generation targets in the past ten months of the 2023/24 Ethiopian fiscal year.
According to Ms. Truwork Shiferaw, Head of Planning of the Power Generation Operations Department at EEP, the dam generated more than 2,700 gigawatt hours of electricity, which is 26 percent more than the initial plan of 2,152.8 gigawatt hours.
She emphasized that this increased power generation is attributed to the dam’s ability to store more water the two turbines to operate at full capacity.
Ms. Truwork added that GERD contributed 16 percent of the country’s total 16,900 gigawatt hours of electricity generated in the past ten months from various power plants.
It is noted that the dam’s two operational turbines have a capacity of 375 megawatts each, and when the remaining 11 units installed on the dam start producing power, it is expected to increase the country’s current generation capacity by 83 percent.
According to EEP, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project will have a generating capacity of 5,150 megawatts and an annual energy output of 15,760 gigawatt hours when fully completed.
