Former combatants in Afar region begin to undergo rehabilitation training

Addis Ababa, December 18, 2024 (FMC) – The National Rehabilitation Commission of Ethiopia (NRC) announced that the work of bringing ex-militants to the rehabilitation training center in Afar region has officially started today.

Note that an agreement was reached in the presence of chief administrator of Afar regional state Mr. Awol Arba, high level officials from Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and other stakeholders on the 15th of November 2024 that the ex-combatants in the region hand over their weapons and begin the rehabilitation training in order to return to their normal lives.

On that day, former combatants of Afar movement party confirmed that they are committed to peace and development by giving up their weapons.

Accordingly, the first round of rehabilitation trainees from among the 1,750 ex-militants in the region has officially started today.

On the occasion, Director of Program Planning and Monitoring at the Commission, Colonel Belay Abebe, officially confirmed the beginning of the rehabilitation process in Afar region at rehabilitation centers.

After six days of rehabilitative training, ex-combatants will be reintegrated into society, returning them into their normal lives, he said.

He also stated that the education and training given to ex-militants who are going through rehabilitation training as well as financial support will lay the foundation for their future lives.

Recall that the first phase of the rehabilitation of 75,000 former militants in the Tigray region has officially started on 21st November 2024.
