FM Taye highlights the role of BRICS in shaping fairer, representative global governance
Addis Ababa, September 27, 2024 (FBC) – On the margins of the 79th UNGA in New York, Foreign Minister Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting.
In his remark, Ambassador Taye thanked Brazil for convening the annual BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting at the margins of the United Nations General Assembly. He also expressed his gratitude to the Russian Federation, the current presidency, for its efforts in forging strong ties among BRICS countries.
He further noted that there is a rising expectation and interest in what the BRICS framework seeks to achieve by advocating for reform of institutions of the global governance by ensuring equitable representation and voice in global affairs. He added that there is a need to intensify effort for reform towards an inclusive and responsive multilateralism.
On United Nations Security Council reform, Foreign Minister Taye further stressed that, reform efforts of the Security Council should give special priority to Africa’s representation.
Such an effort, he added, goes directly to making the Security Council more credible, legitimate, and capable of responding to global challenges. He further elaborated Ethiopia’s position that Ethiopia strongly advocates for the implementation of the African Common position to its fullest extent as there is no half solution to Africa’s legitimate quest to rectify the historic injustice done to it.
The Minister underscored, equitable geographical scope, sharing BRICS values, and maintaining cordial relations with member states of BRICS, respect for the Charter of the United Nations should guide the relations among current members and in expanding the scope of partnership. He added that these principles will help strengthen the role of BRICS in shaping a reformed, fairer, and representative global governance.
