Fish processing, marketing centre inaugurated in Gambella region
Addis Ababa, January 9, 2023 (FBC) – A fish processing and marketing centre was inaugurated earlier today aiming to develop and utilize the fish resources in the Gambella region through contemporary system.
The centre was inaugurated by the Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla, and the chief administrator of Gambella Region, Umod Ujulu.
MoIT Minister Belete said that the project is part of the plan to become competitive in the global market by underpinning agricultural products with technology and adding value.
He said that the project will enable Ethiopia to reduce the shortage of foreign currency by avoiding the import of fish products via foreign currency.
Chief administrator of Gambella Region, Umod Ujulu, for his part, said that the Fish Processing and Marketing Centre will provide fish products to the local and foreign markets.
According to the Gambella region government communication service, the Centre will also help to alleviate the country’s shortage of fish products.
The statement indicated that there are more than 113 species of fish in the water resources of the region, and 15 of them are species that are in high demand in the market.
