Ethiopia celebrates opening of Africa’s first ultrasound assembly plant
Addis Ababa, February 11, 2024 (FBC) – An ultrasound assembly plant, the first of its kind in Africa, has been inaugurated in Ethiopia today, the Ministry of Health confirmed.
The plant is said to be a collaborative project between ElsMed Healthcare Solutions of Israel, Siemens Healthineers of Germany, and the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. It is stated that the project is great example of strong public-private cooperation between the aforementioned trio of entities.
This groundbreaking ultrasound assembly plant has been touted as the fruit of strong international partnerships and proves that Israeli companies are continuing to push the Israel-Ethiopia relationship a notch higher through innovation, including in the health sector.
The ultrasound medical equipment assembly factory is stationed in Huajian Industrial Park, in the southern part of Addis Ababa, commonly known as Haile Garment Area.
It is stated that the factory will assemble ultrasound devices that can diagnose different types of diseases.
In her remarks at the inaugural event, State Minister of Health, Frehiwot Abebe, said that the factory’s commissioning will play a key role in providing access to advanced technology treatment in Africa beyond Ethiopia.
Ronen Bahur, president of ElsMed Solutions Company, said, “After many years of preparation, we are happy that the factory has become a reality.”
For his part, ElsMed Ethiopia representative Dawit Hailu said that the equipment to be manufactured by the factory will bear the “Made in Ethiopia” label and is a source of pride for Ethiopia.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of State for Health Frehiwot Abebe, former Minister of Health Lia Tadese, German and Israeli ambassadors to Ethiopia and other guests.
