Finland ready to support Ethiopia’s sustainable development initiatives: Ambassador

Addis Ababa, December 2, 2024 (FBC) – In an exclusive interview with FBC, Sinikka Antila, Finland’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, emphasized her country’s dedication to partnering with Ethiopia on sustainable development initiatives. Celebrating three decades of cooperation in water and sanitation, the Ambassador highlighted additional collaborative areas, including education, agriculture, and digital land registration.

Antila pointed out that Finland, along with other Nordic nations, possesses extensive experience in sustainable practices such as waste recycling and the circular economy. “We do not waste materials; every household recycles metal, paper, plastics, and cardboard, resulting in minimal mixed waste,” she explained.

She noted that the world is grappling with severe climate change challenges, commending Ethiopia for its proactive approach. Finland is poised to support local startups and innovative projects in waste recycling, aligning with Ethiopia’s efforts to combat climate change and create job opportunities for the youth.

The ambassador also praised Ethiopia’s government for its impressive green development initiatives, including the expansion of parks and infrastructure renovation in Addis Ababa. With rapid urbanization amplifying waste generation, she underscored the importance of assisting Addis Ababa in enhancing its waste management systems. The development of green parks and tree planting projects are pivotal for positioning the city favorably in the face of these challenges.
