Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma closes season with a win in New York
Addis Ababa, September 27, 2024 (FBC) – World 800m indoor champion and Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia has taken down world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya at Athlos NYC, this year’s final World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, in New York on Thursday (26).
The new all-women meeting, held at the Icahn Stadium, featured six elite events – the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 100m hurdles – with prize money of $60,000 up for grabs for each winner.
Tsige, who became the world indoor 800m champion in Glasgow in March, ended her year on a high as she won the 800m by more than half a second.
The 23-year-old, who claimed Olympic silver in Paris, ran 1:57.43 for the third-fastest time of her career to beat world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya, who clocked 1:58.05.
Meanwhile, another Ethiopian young athlete Diribe Welteji has finished 2nd in the 1500 race with time of 4:05.58, behind Faith Kipyegon of Kenya who clocked 4:04.79 to win the race.
