Ethiopia’s Quest for Sea Access Key to Drive Regional Integration
Addis Ababa, December 22, 2024 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s quest for sea access is not only a national priority but also crucial to realizing regional integration based on the principle of give and take, Foreign Affairs State Minister Ambassador Misganu Arga underscored.
The State Minister emphasized that Ethiopia’s quest for access to the sea is rooted in the principle of regional cooperation, extending beyond national interests.
According to Mesganu, securing a sea port is vital for Ethiopia’s survival, as the country’s economy continues to grow, making access to a sea increasingly critical to support this expansion.
He further elaborated that Ethiopia is pursuing a strategic and peaceful approach to securing a reliable and safe access to sea.
“Such access is essential not only for the country’s rapid economic development but also for the progress of the broader region and the international community,” he underscored.
Ethiopia’s growing trade demands dependable sea access, the ambassador noted, stressing that Ethiopia is committed to ensuring the process of securing sea access entirely through peaceful mechanisms.
The Ambassador also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s strong commitment to the security of the Red Sea and the maintenance of peace in the region.
He mentioned about Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts in combating terrorism as an example of its dedication to regional stability.
Reflecting on the evolving role of the sea access issue in Ethiopia’s foreign policy, the ambassador noted that while it was not a significant concern in the past, it has gained increasing importance in recent years, marking a diplomatic milestone for the country.
Moreover, Ambassador Misganu emphasized that Ethiopia’s development and prosperity offer valuable market opportunities, which will enhance economic ties and generate mutual benefits for neighboring countries as well, as called by local newswire service ENA.
