Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is enhancing food security: COP28 President

Addis Ababa, September 5, 2023 (FBC) – Addressing the African Climate Summit 2023 taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, the COP28 President-Designate and the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Sultan al Jaber (PhD), stated that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is enhancing food security.

Dr. Sultan al Jabar also stated that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is stimulating green jobs across the Horn of Africa setting examples for the world.

In his remarks at the Summit, Sultan al Jaber said: “Africa contributes only 3 percent of the global carbon emission but yet suffers the worst consequences. Drought conditions and floods which are being caused by climate change are exposing one-fifth of Africans to hunger,”

“But, there is also another narrative that unfortunately is overlooked and in a big way undermined and underestimated that need to get out here and that’s Africa is also a beacon of hope filled with potential and g global example of what pro-climate and nature positive development should and must look like,” he underscored, citing Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative as a good example.

“Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is enhancing food security in the country and stimulating green jobs across the Horn of Africa,” Dr. Sultan al Jabar noted.

The impact of climate change tripled the number of people displaced in the last three years, and is dragging down Africa’s GDP growth by at least 5pct every year.

The COP28 President-Designate further stressed the need for an inclusive climate plan that leaves no one behind, calling all parties to unite around the plan.

The plan will help fast tracks a just responsive and orderly energy transition focusing on peoples’ livelihoods, according to the President.

“The world is losing the race to secure the goals of the Paris Agreement,” he said, calling for an integrated approach that will deliver transformational progress.
