Ethiopia’s agricultural reforms making strides in food security, says DPM Temesgen

Addis Ababa, August 14, 2024 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh announced substantial advancements in enhancing food security in Ethiopia through recent agricultural reforms.

He made this announcement during the opening of the National Agricultural Investment Forum and Exhibition, themed “Utilizing the Potentials in the Agricultural Sector.” The two-day event has attracted participation from regional government leaders, Agriculture Minister Girma Amente (PhD), FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero, foreign ambassadors, investors, and various stakeholders.

Temesgen emphasized Ethiopia’s favorable climate and environment for agricultural investments, reaffirming the government’s dedication, alongside farmers, to transform the agricultural sector. He encouraged foreign investors to collaborate with Ethiopia in utilizing potentials with advanced technologies.

Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente noted the significant progress made in irrigation, which has previously been reliant on rainfall, enhancing agricultural productivity. He highlighted that these reforms have enabled Ethiopia to start exporting agricultural products, which he believes is vital for attracting foreign direct investment.

FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero underscored the necessity of uninterrupted initiatives and projects focused on food sovereignty and security. He praised Ethiopia’s achievements in agriculture and emphasized the FAO’s commitment to supporting agricultural and investment projects aimed at ensuring food security across multiple countries, including Ethiopia.

The National Agricultural Investment Forum aims to provide investors with vital insights into agricultural mechanization, irrigated wheat cultivation, soil health, animal fodder development, and sustainable animal husbandry practices.
