Ethiopians start month-long prayer, fasting against COVID19
Addis Ababa, April 7, 2020 (FBC) –Ethiopian religious institutions have begun a month-long prayer and fasting for an end to coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic.
The launching event was attended by President Sahle-Work Zewde, religious leaders, Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Peace, Keria Ibrahim Speaker of the House of Federation and Engr. Takle Uma, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa city.
A minute of silence was held to remember those who have died from the coronavirus in Ethiopia and worldwide.
In her remarks, President Sahle-Work extended her gratitude to the religious institutions for contributing their shares to the national COVID-19 containment efforts.
Those who have strictly adhered to advises given by healthcare professionals managed to deter the spread as well as protect themselves and their families form the virus.
The current problem, which is new by its nature, seeks determination, partnership and friendship, the President added.
She said religious leaders have a great role to teach and encourage the people to apply all cautionary advises and convince the public that after darkness comes the light.
Ethiopia currently has 44 confirmed cases, with two deaths and four recoveries.
According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, more than 1.3 million cases of coronavirus have been registered globally.
Nearly 75,000 people have died and more than 285,000 have recovered, according to the university’s figures.
