Ethiopian National Veterinary Institute says working to become a regional center of excellence
Addis Ababa, June 29, 2024 (FBC) – The Ethiopian National Veterinary Institute (NVI), one of Ethiopia’s leading public enterprises, has celebrated its 60th Anniversary in its Headquarters in Bishoftu town in the presence of high ranking government officials, veteran researchers and representatives of various regional and international organizations today.
On the occasion, the Director General of the Institute, Dr. Takelle Abayneh, stated that the public enterprise has been producing more than 340 million doses of animal medicines on a daily basis for local and regional use.
Dr. Takelle disclosed that the institute is currently producing 26 types of animal vaccines and drugs that are being distributed to African and Middle East countries.
Saying that the institute has contributed a lot in combating animal pandemics in Ethiopia and the East African region at large, Dr. Takelle pointed out. He added that the enterprise has established its own drug production facility where it is producing various kinds of veterinary medicines to meet the domestic and regional demand.
He noted that the institute has been undertaking a wide range of activities backed by huge financial budget and technology to expand its vaccine and drug production and capacity thereby becoming a regional center of excellence in Africa.
Habtamu Hailemichael, Director of Public Enterprises Holding and Administration, for his part, commended the capacity of the institute in accelerating the development of the livestock production development through effective prevention of diseases affecting animals.
Habtamu underscored that the institute’s proven activities are also instrumental in promoting agricultural productivity and accelerating the “Bounty of Basket” national initiatives citing its efforts in the production of vaccines and drugs helpful in the poultry production sector as exemplary stride.
