Ethiopian forward Abel Yalew joins Egyptian side ZED FC
Addis Ababa, February 1, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopian international Abel Yalew has joined Egyptian side ZED Football Club from Saint George Football Club in a two-and-a-half year contract, the Horsemen confirmed earlier today.
Note that ZED FC are the current leaders of the Egyptian Premier League table after being promoted from the lower league in the previous season. To bolster its squad, this club has been making moves to sign the attacking midfielder from Saint George (The Horsemen).
The player, who has had six months remaining on his contract with St. George, officially joined ZED FC on the deadline of the Egyptian winter transfer window.
Following his switch to ZED FC, Abel becomes the 5th Ethiopian player to play in the Egyptian Premier League after Salahadin Saiid, Shimels Bekele, Omed Ukrui and Gatuoch Panom.
Abel has been in great form in the Ethiopian Premier League so far this season. He is currently the top goalscorer of Ethiopian Premier League with 8 goals in 12 matches although his club Saint George has been in inconsistent form this season.
Speaking on his transfer to the Egyptian league, Abel said, “I am very happy that this opportunity has become a reality. I am very grateful to the [St. George] fans, I have been with the club in good and bad times and I think I have given everything I could to the club. I wish all the best to St. George S.A.”
He revealed that he had other transfer enquiries previously from other clubs abroad. “Now a better time has come and I am going to embark on my career outside of my country. This is a massive opportunity that does not come too often. I am working to improve my game and get better.”
He recalled that he has had difficult spells at St. George, especially before the last back-to-back league title successes. “During my stay at St. George, we had some difficult moments, especially, prior to our back-to-back league title successes in the last two seasons. Winning the league with the club was my biggest achievement.”
