Ethiopian Diaspora encouraged to embrace economic reforms for active role in national development
Addis Ababa, January 22, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Diaspora Association, in collaboration with various public and private entities, has inaugurated Diaspora Week in Addis Ababa, drawing participation from government officials, diaspora members, and other interested stakeholders.
As part of the event, a Bazaar and Exhibition showcasing financial institutions and local producers has commenced at the Ghion Hotel, running from January 22 to 23, 2025.
Ambassador Anteneh Tariku, representing the Ethiopian Diaspora Service, highlighted that the government is implementing enabling measures to foster greater engagement of the diaspora in the nation’s socio-economic landscape. He affirmed the government’s dedication to collaborating with the diaspora community and relevant parties to create an environment conducive to their involvement in economic development initiatives.
“Efforts are concentrated on helping the diaspora capitalize on key investment opportunities in Ethiopia,” Ambassador Anteneh remarked. He added that recent financial reforms now allow diaspora members to open foreign currency accounts locally, facilitating their entry into various investment sectors. This development aims to enable the diaspora to make substantial contributions to the country’s economy, both directly and indirectly.
Furthermore, he noted that the diaspora can now access the National Fayda ID, which is essential for receiving timely social and economic services from both public and private sectors in Ethiopia, urging members to take advantage of these opportunities.
In a related initiative, Kidist Leulseged, President of the Ethiopian Diaspora Association, announced that similar Diaspora Week events and exhibitions are planned to take place in Canada next month. She emphasized the organization’s commitment to empowering and mobilizing the Ethiopian diaspora globally for the betterment of their homeland.
