Ethiopian delegation led by Upper House Speaker taking part in 146th IPU Assembly
Addis Ababa, March 13, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopian delegation led by the Speaker of the House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, is taking part in the 146th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Manama, Bahrain.
The 146th IPU Assembly which started on March 11 will run till March 15, Ethiopian Embassy in Bahrain stated.
Addressing the Assembly, Agegnehu highlighted the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic in Ethiopia and the world at large. He underscored the role of peace in ensuring democracy and development and protecting human rights. Agegnehu affirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to continue its peacekeeping contribution.
He explained about Ethiopia’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan and the detente with neighboring Eritrea.
The Upper House Speaker noted that the peace agreement reached between the federal government and the TPLF has created an enabling climate for the ongoing humanitarian aid delivery apart from restoring peace in the country.
All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs, are attending the Assembly.
The General Debate focuses on the overall theme of Promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies: Fighting intolerance – and provides a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views and galvanize parliamentary action in this area.
