Ethiopian coffee gaining foothold in international market with rising popularity
Addis Ababa, March 17, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia, often referred to as the birthplace of coffee, its commodity (coffee) has been gaining a foothold in China and the global market, with its sales volume showing growth increase in recent years.
The third Beijing CBD International Coffee Culture Festival was held in the Beijing CBD CP Centre, gathering nearly 50 distinctive coffee brands and providing a great spot for the coffee enthusiasts.
As part of the 2025 Beijing CBD Forum series, this event brings nearly 50 distinctive coffee brands together, creating a vibrant space for coffee lovers to indulge in tastings, join interactive sharing sessions, and explore virtual tours of coffee industry parks—all while embracing the flavors of spring.
The Ethiopian diplomatic mission in China co-organized this forum, it was indicated.
Ambassador Dawano Kedir, the Deputy Head of Mission, made a presentation on Ethiopian coffee.
In his presentation, he said that Ethiopia is renowned for its diverse coffee varieties, particularly Arabica, which is considered the finest quality in the world.
He indicated that the demand for Ethiopian coffee is increasing significantly in various countries, including the Chinese market.
He also said that the government is reinforcing new programs to increase the production and quality of coffee.
The Deputy Head of Mission also noted that coffee production in Ethiopia is significantly increasing in quantity and quality due to the attention given by the government. He also urged Ethiopian coffee exporters to work with Chinese companies in coffee export trade and other coffee sectors.
A report shows that China has been importing up to 20,000 metric tons of Ethiopian coffee annually for the last two years, becoming the eighth-largest importer of Ethiopian coffee,
In the past three years or so, the amount of coffee Ethiopia exports to China has been growing at an average rate of 27 percent annually, it was indicated.
Various Ethiopian coffee export products were displayed at the festival, and discussions were held with representatives of various companies regarding the coffee trade.
The Ethiopian Embassy in Beijing said those companies, various coffee buyers, exporters, distributors, processors, and government and private institutions involved in the coffee sector participated in the program.
