Ethiopia wants sea outlet through peaceful efforts centered on give & take principle: MoFA Spokesperson

Addis Ababa, 25, 2025 (FMC) — The way Ethiopia wants to secure a reliable and sustainable maritime access is through peaceful diplomatic efforts centered on give and take principle, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Nebiat Getachew stated.

Recall that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently said that Ethiopia’s desire for access to sea outlet is through peaceful dialogue and discussion.

He also noted that the nation’s quest for access to sea outlets with costal countries along the Red Sea region has been increasingly recognized as necessity and legitimate by the international community.

According to the premier, the quest for sea outlet is not just a matter of national interest but a pressing need for its burgeoning economic growth.

While responding to questions posed by the members of the House of People’s Representatives, PM Abiy noted that Ethiopia’s quest for maritime access is justified by the international community as no other landlocked nation surpasses Ethiopia in size of landmass and population.

Foreign Affairs Spokesman Nebiat Getachew on his part said that the quest for maritime access has recently become a pressing concern for Ethiopia as the nation seeks sustainable and secure access to the sea.

In this context, the issue of a sea outlet is increasingly reflected in diplomatic activities of the country, he added.

“The quest for maritime access or sea outlet for Ethiopia has recently become a matter of concern as the nation needs sustainable and secured seaport or outlet to the sea; and the issue is being reflected in our diplomatic activities.”

The nation will persist in its efforts to secure sustainable maritime access, he told local news agency ENA.

However, the way that Ethiopia wants to secure a reliable and sustainable maritime access or sea outlet is through peaceful diplomatic efforts centered on give and take principle, the spokesman elaborated.

According to him, the approach to achieving sea outlet for Ethiopia is firmly rooted in peaceful diplomacy and the diplomatic initiative is grounded in a win-win principle.

“The way that Ethiopia is working to secure reliable and sustainable maritime access or sea outlet is through peaceful diplomatic efforts grounded in a give-and-take principle. The nation is committed to persistently pursuing this goal of achieving sustainable maritime access.”
