Ethiopia, UNAIDS discuss plans to reduce spread of HIV
Addis Ababa, March 18, 2021 (FBC) -President Sahle-Work Zewde met with Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
The two discussed the many initiatives being undertaken by the organization as well as future plans to reduce the spread of the virus, according to Office of the President.
In a related development, Byanyima also held discussion with Minister of Women, Children and Youth Filsan Abdullahi.
They discussed about protecting young and adolescent girls from risks such as child marriage, teenage pregnancy and HIV.
They also talked about the negative social and economic impact of the COVID-19 on girls and women.
Byanyima explained that UNAIDS in collaboration with UN Women, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNESCO will be launching an initiative on universal secondary education in 16 countries including Ethiopia.
Filsan stated Ethiopia’s commitment to take the lead on the initiative.
