Ethiopia, UAE’s Masdar ink agreement to jointly develop solar photovoltaic plants

Addis Ababa, January 18, 2023 (FBC) – The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates have signed a Joint development agreement (JDA) to develop two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Ethiopia.

The Office of the Prime Minister indicated that the FDRE Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, together with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates witnessed the signing of an agreement with Masdar Clean Energy to develop two solar photovoltaic plants with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts, before the Prime Minister and his delegation returned to Ethiopia.

It is stated that the two photovoltaic plants have capacity of up to 500 megawatts.

After attending the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that Ethiopia has unparalleled renewable energy resources.

“The global net zero emission target offers a great economic opportunity to harness our renewable resources and ensure access to abundant, clean and affordable energy for Ethiopia and beyond”, he added.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his delegation has been attending the 2023 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week where he shared Ethiopia’s experience on clean energy endeavours.

Masdar, also known as the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, is a UAE-government owned renewable energy company based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
