Ethiopia, South Sudan ink MoU for power infrastructure integration
Addis Ababa, May 6, 2022 (FBC) – Ethiopia and South Sudan have inked MoU for joint power infrastructure integration represented by their water energy ministers.
State Minister of the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Deputy Minister of the South Sudanese Ministry of Electricity and Dams, Tom Remis have signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries.
During the signing ceremony, the Water and Energy Minister, Dr. Habtamu Itefa said Ethiopia is working hard to address the growing power demand in the region by investing in renewable energy sector including solar, geothermal and hydroelectric areas.
The construction of the power infrastructure is to be carried out with two phases; the first with 357 Km covers areas from Gambella Sub Station to Malakal town of Sough Sudan, while the second stretches from Dedesa-Tepi Sub Station to Medina Juba of South Sudan with 700 Km length.
Minister of the South Sudanese Ministry of Electricity and Dams , Peter Marselo, for his part, said integration between Ehtiopia and South Sudna in power infrasturcute will have a paramount significance in uplifting livelihoods of people of the two countries in many aspects.
Ethiopia is earning annually about 50 Million USD from electric power export to neighbors including Sudan and Djibouti, he added that efforts are being intensified to earn 400 million USD in the next 10 years.
During the last nine months, 37 Million USD was secured from power supply, which exceeds 7% as compared to the same period last year, he added.
