Ethiopia, Somalia engage in talks on the implementation of Ankara Declaration: MFA

Addis Ababa, January 3, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia and Somalia are currently in discussions to implement the Ankara Declaration, which was facilitated by Turkiye, according to a recent press briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the biweekly briefing, Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Nebiat Getachew provided updates on the evolving situation in the Horn of Africa, the regional geopolitical landscape, and Ethiopia’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives.

Ambassador Nebiat reported that Ethiopia and Somalia are engaged in bilateral talks aimed at actualizing the commitments made in Ankara, Turkiye. Central to their discussions is a joint strategy to combat the common threat posed by Al-Shabaab and to promote a terrorism-free environment in the region.

Additionally, the two nations are deliberating on the potential deployment of Post-ATMIS peacekeeping forces in Somalia, with a focus on Ethiopia’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability both regionally and beyond.

The Ambassador also highlighted Ethiopia’s active engagement with various stakeholders to facilitate the restoration of peace in Sudan and the broader region, emphasizing the country’s steadfast dedication to regional peace and security.
