Ethiopia-Somalia agreement reflects leaders’ common goals, desire for strengthened collaboration: EPDI President

Addis Ababa, December 17, 2024 (FMC) – In an interview with Fana Media Corporation, Yassin Ahmed, the President of the Ethiopian Public Diplomacy Institute (EPDI), stated that the recent agreement represents “the fulfillment of Ethiopia’s aspirations and aligns with the new foreign policy initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), which emphasizes shared interests and economic cooperation as foundational elements of foreign relations.”

Yassin Ahmed highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Ethiopia and Somalia, noting that despite the conflicts and differences they have encountered, leaders from both nations have consistently forged cooperation agreements. He emphasized Somalia’s dependency on Ethiopia, noting that three Ethiopian rivers flow into Somali territory, alongside the deep social and cultural connections between their peoples.

He expressed hope that the two nations will arrive at an agreement that advances their mutual interests and strengthens bilateral cooperation. Yassin pointed out that the Ankara declaration occurred due to the leaders’ shared recognition of common interests and the need to prevent foreign interference, asserting that this agreement marks a new chapter filled with promise and opportunities for enhanced cooperation.

Additionally, the agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia has garnered recognition both regionally and internationally. Yassin believes this support reflects a collective desire to stabilize the Horn of Africa, a region of significant strategic importance. He underscored that Ethiopian diplomacy has made substantial progress, particularly following Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s announcement in October of last year regarding Ethiopia’s aspiration for a peaceful sea outlet under international law, conveying the international community’s acknowledgment of Ethiopia’s historical rights to the Red Sea.
