Ethiopia pledges to transform refugee camps into urban settlements

Addis Ababa, December 15, 2023 (FBC) – Government of Ethiopia has pledged to transform selected refugee camps into sustainable urban settlements to enhance the social cohesion and economic participation of refugees and communities hosting them, Refugees and Returnees Service of Ethiopia (RRS) disclosed today.

The scheme will also foster inclusive growth and sustainable development through improved and integrated service provisions.

It will also offer a lifeline for refugees where displaced communities rebuild their lives and become resilient by integrating with their hosts and accommodating diversity.

Urbanization requires enhancing the quality and availability of shelter, infrastructure and public services such as roads, electricity, water, sanitation, health and education where global support is very crucial then.
