Ethiopia launches second round of multimodal transport operators to strengthen logistics
Addis Ababa, March 14, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Maritime Authority has initiated the second round of its Multimodal Transport Operators induction program, further advancing the nation’s logistics sector.
The launch event took place today in Addis Ababa, attended by Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, Director General of the Ethiopian Maritime Authority, Abdulber Shemsu, and other esteemed dignitaries.
In his remarks, Alemu Sime emphasized ongoing efforts to expand Ethiopia’s benefits from the logistics sector by allowing more multimodal transport operators to participate.
He underscored that the multimodal transport system enhances the seamless handling of import and export goods through an integrated approach, reinforcing the country’s economic framework.
The Minister further highlighted the necessity of fostering competition among operators to improve service quality.
He urged licensed operators to uphold their responsibilities diligently to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the sector.
For his part, Abdulber Shemsu, noted that port operations, storage in seaport warehouses, and the facilitation of customs and port services are time-consuming and costly processes.
He asserted that the multimodal transport system is designed to mitigate these challenges by streamlining transit logistics and expediting cargo movement.
He further stressed that the system plays a crucial role in reducing transit times for imported goods, enhancing cargo security, and minimizing foreign exchange expenditures, ultimately boosting Ethiopia’s trade competitiveness.
