Ethiopia expedites preparations ahead of upcoming AU Summit
Addis Ababa, December 16, 2024 (FMC) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA Ethiopia) has launched a comprehensive capacity-building training program aimed at enhancing Ethiopia’s conference tourism sector.
The training, being held at the Africa Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX), is part of Ethiopia’s preparation for hosting the 38th African Union (AU) Summit of Heads of State and Government on February 15-16, 2025, and the 46th AU Executive Council Meeting on February 12-13, 2025.
Ethiopia, as the diplomatic capital of Africa and the seat of the African Union, plays a pivotal role in hosting major continental events. The annual AU meetings bring thousands of delegates, including heads of state, diplomats, and international stakeholders, further solidifying Addis Ababa’s position as a hub for global diplomacy.
The training program, designed for AFLEX cadets and youth volunteers, focuses on protocol services, national achievements, and the promotion of Ethiopia’s image on the international stage. Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of integrating urban development with conference tourism to boost Ethiopia’s diplomatic and economic standing.
Ambassador Birtukan highlighted that this initiative not only prepares the nation for the high-profile AU summit but also instills a sense of patriotism and responsibility among the youth. “By equipping the new generation with diplomatic skills and fostering their participation in national achievements, we are creating future leaders who will uphold Ethiopia’s image and contribute to its prosperity,” she said.
The training, according to the Ministry, aims to empower young participants to embrace the ethos of “every citizen as a diplomat,” promoting goodwill and patriotism. The program underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to ensuring the success of the upcoming AU summit and enhancing the country’s reputation as a premier destination for conference tourism.
