Ethiopia committed to implement pledges on refugees: Deputy PM
Addis Ababa, December 15, 2023 (FBC) – Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to fully implement the six new pledges declared during the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, Switzerland.
Speaking at the IGAD Support Forum meeting, held on the margins of the Global Refugee Forum, Demeke said Ethiopia has made substantial new pledges and commits to supporting the regional response for displacement and refugees.
Demeke also praised IGAD for its contributions in humanitarian support and sustainable development.
Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, on his opening remark, noted the critical need for technical support and financial resources to implement the pledges and urged all stakeholders to keep the displaced population on their political and development agenda.
Director General of Refugees and Returnee Affairs, Ms. Teyiba Hassan, said Ethiopia has made significant strides in providing essential documents for refugees and asylum seekers.
