Ethiopia commemorates 85th Yekatit 12 Martyrs’ Day
Addis Ababa, February 19, 2022 (FBC) – Ethiopians have commemorated the 85th Yekatit 12 Martyrs’ Day in the vicinity of Yekatit 12 Monument remembering the massacre of close to 30,000 innocent residents of Addis Ababa in 1937 by the Italian invaders under the command of Marshal Rodolfo Graziani.
High government officials including Speaker of the Addis Ababa City Council, Buzena Alqadir, Head of the Addis Ababa Culture, Tourism and Arts Bureau, Hirut Kassa (PhD), religious leaders, representatives of Ethiopian Patriot Association, veterans, public leaders and hundreds of residents of Addis Ababa attended the memorial ceremony in the vicinity of Yekatit 12 Memorial Monument at Sidist Kilo locality in the capital.
City Council Speaker Buzena Alqadir along with President of Ethiopian Patriots Association, Lij Daniel Jote Mesfin laid wreath of flower on the Martyrs’ Memorial Monument.
Historical accounts indicate that the killing of Ethiopians by the fascist invadors began during the afternoon of Friday 19 February almost immediately after Graziani was injured by a grenade attack carried out by two youth Ethiopian patriots Moges Asgedom and Abraha Deboch and continued until February 21, 1937.
