Ethiopia calls for transit from promises to practice at COP30 in Brazil
Addis Ababa, March 26, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia has called for transit from promises to practice at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP30) which will be held in Brazil.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Ministry of Planning and Development Ms. Fistum Aseffa (PhD) is participating in the 16th edition of Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD) 2025 in Berlin, Germany, which runs from 25 to 26 March 2025.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Fitsum expressed the Government of Ethiopia’s commitment to fully implement the outcomes of the 1st Global Stocktake (GST) against the Paris Agreement. The Minister further stressed the need for enhanced and renewed commitment to address ever increasing impacts of climate change.
She expressed the Government of Ethiopia’s continued commitment and leadership in championing climate action through announcing hosting of the 2nd Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) and warmly invited participants to book for their attendance.
In her speech, the Ethiopian minister called for transit from promises to practice at COP30 in Brazil making it as a turning point for course corrects our passed story.
On the sidelines of the event, Ms. Fitsum also had a discussion with André Corrêa do Lago, COP30 President-Designate [Brazil]. The two officials explored ways of active involvement of Ethiopia in the road to and at COP30 for a making it a successful COP through showcasing Ethiopia’s exemplary climate actions including Green Legacy and food system transformation initiatives.
The Minister has invited Mr. Andre to attend the ACS2 to be held in September 2025.
In response, Mr. Andre invited Ethiopia to join the United for Bio-Forest coalition and promised to make available space for presenting Ethiopia’s cases at COP30.
In the same vein, Ms. Fitsum also met with Simon Stiell, UNFCCC Executive Secretary to discuss the possible collaboration between Ethiopia and UNFCCC Secretariat on how Ethiopia and Africa in general could meet their interests in the UNFCCC process including hosting Africa Climate Week. She also invited him to attend Ethiopia-sponsored Africa Climate Summit in September 2025.
During the course of their engagement, the two parties agreed to work closely in addressing climate change.
Petersberg Climate Dialogue 2025 is a dialogue hosted by the Government of Germany and Brazil in Berlin from 25-26 March 2025 in Germany, Berlin that has been held every year ahead of every COP. This year it invites about 40 countries across the globe that are thought shaped the intended outcomes of COP30.
