Ethiopia calls for equitable burden, responsibility sharing
Addis Ababa, July 2, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia has called for equitable burden and responsibility sharing, at the 90th Standing Committee meeting of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 1-3, 2024.
In his remarks during the first day of the meeting, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Geneva, Tsegab Kebebew, underlined the significant impacts of ongoing underfunding that Ethiopia, the continent’s second-largest refugee-hosting nation, has endured in recent years.
Despite it being well known that there is a budget deficit for the UNHCR, certain countries that accept refugees are disproportionately affected, Amb. Tsegab further explained.
He further emphasized that equitable burden and responsibility sharing is essential to reducing the strain on host nations, as posted on social media by the Ethiopian Permanent Mission in Geneva.
