Ethiopia calls for concerted efforts to realize GRF pledges
Addis Ababa, March 14, 2024 (FBC) – The 89th Standing Committee of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme meeting is taking place in Geneva from 13-15 March 2024.
During the meeting Tsegab Kebebew, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Switzerland and UN Geneva, underlined Ethiopia’s unwavering solidarity for those fleeing conflict and seeking safety.
The envoy said that Ethiopia has made a major stride on refugee protection, inclusion in national systems and creating an enabling environment to the refugees despite its own challenges, including the impact of climate change.
He highlighted the pledges made by Ethiopia during Global Refugee Forum (GRF) in December 2023 and the efforts that have been taken by Ethiopia so far. He said that making pledges is a first step but not an end. It has to be accompanied by meaningful actions.
Amb. Tsegab said that Ethiopia has started issuing digital IDs to refugees in line with its GRF pledges which is a testimony of Ethiopia’s commitment to implement its pledges. He called upon partners to join Ethiopia in full realization of its commitments.
He also underscored the importance of joining the internal displacement solutions fund which promotes national leadership and strategies that are fully inclusive in addressing the needs of IDPs, as per Ethiopian Permanent Mission in Geneva.
