Ethiopia aims to elevate coffee production and revenue, says PM Abiy Ahmed
Addis Ababa, December 11, 2024 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced significant advancements in the country’s coffee production sector as efforts intensify to position Ethiopia not only as the birthplace of coffee but also as a leading coffee-producing nation.
Over the past five years, Ethiopia has witnessed a remarkable increase in annual coffee production, which has doubled from 500,000 tons. During the 2016 fiscal year, the coffee trade generated over 1.4 billion USD in revenue. This year, the government aims to boost that figure to 2 billion USD, with substantial progress already being reported.
The introduction of modern coffee irrigation systems and machine-assisted harvesting techniques has notably enhanced productivity, allowing for yields of up to 60 quintals per hectare. These developments are clear indicators of Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its coffee industry and increasing its global market presence.
