Ethio-American Naomi Girma named 2020 American Football Player of the Year
Addis Ababa, December 22, 2020 (FBC) – The Ethio-American U.S. National Women’s Under-20 Team captain Naomi Girma, who competed in her first full U.S. National Women’s Team camp this year, has was voted Young American Football Player of the Year 2020.
Naomi, who played a major role in helping Stanford win the 2019 NCAA Championship as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, was the leader of the U.S. defense at the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship 2020.
As team captain, Naomi Girma started six matches in the FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament to help USA secure a spot for the since-canceled FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020 and win the regional title, beating Mexico, 4-1 in the championship Game.
Votes for American Football Player of the Year awards are collected from respective national team coaches, national team players who earned caps in 2020, members of the football board American Football Athletes Council, National Womens Soccer League Head Coaches (for USWNT Awards) and American Football League Head Coaches (MLS and USL) (for USMNT Awards), some members of the media and former players and administrators.
