ERCS and ICRC forge strategic pact for humanitarian support
Addis Ababa, March 6, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sealed a pact on Tuesday by signing the 2024 Operational Cooperation Agreement (OCA) and the three-year Partnership Framework Agreement (PFA) extending from 2024 to 2026.
Getachew Ta’a, Secretary General of Ethiopian Red Cross Society, conveyed a statement during the signing ceremony, emphasizing the enduring commitment and compassion shared between Ethiopian Red Cross Society and International Committee of the Red Cross in alleviating human suffering, especially in conflict-ridden areas.
He outlined the strategic plan for 2024, which includes the allocation of about 207.5 million Birr to bolster emergency services, first aid provisions, volunteer engagement, and humanitarian aid distribution. This funding will also support logistical enhancements, including ambulance services and warehouse construction, to ensure timely aid delivery.
Furthermore, the partnership between Ethiopian Red Cross Society and International Committee of the Red Cross will extend into various humanitarian sectors such as public health, water, sanitation and hygiene, and livelihood support.
Getachew highlighted the organizations’ joint efforts in upholding international humanitarian law to protect civilians from conflict-related harm.
Reflecting on past achievements, Getachew expressed gratitude for the impactful collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which assisted over 400,000 individuals in 2023 alone.
In a corresponding statement, Nicolas Von Arx, Head of Delegation to International Committee of the Red Cross Ethiopia, underscored the significance of the partnership’s geographic reach and collective services in assisting vulnerable communities. He emphasized the joint efforts in restoring access to essentials like food, water, and healthcare while reuniting families separated by conflict and disasters.
Nicolas reaffirmed their commitment to preventing humanitarian crises, promoting international humanitarian law, and safeguarding civilian populations from the ravages of conflict.
