Efforts in progress to curb food system challenges in Ethiopia: Minister
Addis Ababa, April 7, 2023 (FBC) – The Minister of Health, Lia Taddese, stated that efforts are being made to ensure food security and solve food system challenges in Ethiopia.
The 2022 Global Hunger Index report was presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Alliance 2015 members.
In the discussion held under the theme of “Food System Transformation and Local Governance”, the Ministers and partners set the following areas of focus.
During the event, the Minister of Health, Lia Taddese, presented the government’s food and nutrition policy, strategy, the Sekota Declaration, and various programs to ensure citizens’ food security.
Global Index Hunger (GHI) and national report are important to ensure economic growth, achieve sustainable development goals, and reduce child mortality, she said.
On his part, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Horticulture Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, Melese Mekonnen, pointed out that the government is working to ensure food security through the implementation of cluster farming, increasing wheat production, YeLemat Trufat program and others systems.
Together with development partners, the government developed strategies to address food system transformation challenges and improve production, the State Minister confirmed.
On behalf of the Alliance 2015 members, the representative for Concern Worldwide in Ethiopia made a presentation on the report and a panel discussion was held.
In his closing speech, the German Ambassador to Ethiopia, Stefan Auer, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improve the current food and nutrition challenges in Ethiopia.
