Education Minister says advancing educational infrastructure shapes future generations’ prospects
Addis Ababa, September 21, 2023 (FBC) – Advancing educational infrastructure shapes future generations’ prospects, Ethiopia’s Minister of Education Prof. Berhanu Nega said at a side event held on the margins of the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Also the Chancellor of Addis Ababa University, Prof. Birhanu delivered a keynote speech on education as an investment for development, equity, peace and security in the digital age.
“Compared to many other African countries, Ethiopia has allocated 20 percent of its annual budget for education. Since this allocated budget is not sufficient in view of the government’s capacity and the complex problems in the education sector, this year, the entire society is being made to do its part, as the Government has started a national campaign to improve the infrastructure of schools called, “ Education for Generation”,” he added
In addition, although there are multiple challenges in the Ethiopian education system, one of the main problems are the lack of a conducive education infrastructure in schools, he explained, noting that schools lack basic facilities such as wash, lavatories, laboratories, and reliable electric supply.
It would be diffucult to achieve the Global Sustainable Development Goals or resolve the existing challenges unless relevant support to education through investment is provided, it was stated.
