Economic, political diplomacy are priorities of Ethiopia’s foreign policy: DPM & FM Demeke
Addis Ababa, January 11, 2023 (FBC) – The FDRE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, said that economic, political and cultural diplomacy will be emphasized in foreign affairs policy.
DPM & FM Demeke delivers explanation on “Ethiopia’s Diplomacy in the Changing World Alignment” to the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and responsible institutions as well as mission leaders at the African Leadership Excellence Academy.
He said that emphasis will be given to economic, political, cultural and sports diplomacy. He accentuated that key national enterprises and institutions including Ethiopian Airlines should be integrated and utilized for effective deployment.
In order for the foreign policy to overcome international challenges, special emphasis will be given to defend Ethiopia’s national interest on bilateral and multilateral stages by enhancing ties with the neighbouring countries and paying special attention to the regional and pan-African ideas, Demeke emphasized.
The DPM & FM reminded that it is not possible to bring about a different change by working in the same way.
He entrusts diplomats to always prepare in advance to overcome challenges efficiently and perseveringly by increasing their professional skills.
Demeke also underscored that Ethiopia will do intensive work by efficiently using multilateral platforms, including the UN.
He also expounded the situations that have challenged the world’s foreign relations. Hence, the DPM called on diplomats to be alert on the trends and interests of other countries that arise in these situations and undertake important work for Ethiopia.
Citing the current world situation as a paradigm, the DPM also elucidated that diplomatic victory cannot solely achieved by the government institutions. Instead, all sections of the society should be involved to realize the intended aspirations.
Demeke underlined that concerted digital and public diplomacy activities are expected to be carried out in all Ethiopian missions, according to the Spokesperson Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
