ECA, FAO sign MOU to enhance sustainable agricultural dev’t, food security across Africa
Addis Ababa, March 18, 2025 (FMC) – The Economic Commission for Africa and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen sustainable agricultural and agribusiness development, food and nutrition security across Africa.
The agreement was signed on the margins of the ongoing 57th session of the Economic Commission for Africa: Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (COM2025) in Addis Ababa.
The MOU is intended to on making the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) work for Africa, according to a social media post by ECA.
“Agri-ecological zones that were once food baskets are becoming more arid due to climate change. We need the kind of foresight analysis on the interface between climate and food security that helps countries cope” said Mr. Antonio Pedro, Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme Support), Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
“The MOU is timely. We must seize the opportunity to build resilient and sustainable agricultural systems and tackle the impact of climate change on food systems. We can strengthen resource-driven industrialisation, and diversification and achieve net zero goals,” he added.
