Diaspora asked to cheer Ethiopian athletes at Paris Olympic Games
Addis Ababa, May 22, 2024 (FBC) – The National Organizing Committee for the Paris 2024 Olympics has disclosed ambitious plans to facilitate the attendance of over 200,000 members of the Ethiopian diaspora at the upcoming Summer Games.
In a media briefing, Committee President Ashebr Wolde-Giorgis stated that the goal is to secure the participation of this sizable contingent of expatriate Ethiopians to provide robust support and encouragement for the national athletic team as they compete on the global stage.
Ashebr indicated that the organizers are working closely with the Ethiopian Embassy in Paris to ensure the successful mobilization of this diaspora audience.
Derartu Tulu, the President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, provided updates on the national team’s preparations. She revealed that the prospective Olympians have been training since May 6th, expediting their preparations for the Games.
Deratu noted that the 10,000m, 1,500m and 800m athletes’ entry list will be finalized at the Olympic entry trials in Malaga, Spain, while the marathon team finalists have already commenced their training regimen.
She expressed confidence that the top management of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee and Athletics Federation are working diligently to ensure Ethiopia achieves success at the prestigious 2024 Paris Olympics.
The organizers’ efforts to rally the Ethiopian diaspora underscores the importance placed on garnering robust support for the national team’s campaign.
