Deputy Premier calls for timely COVID 19 preparedness
Addis Ababa, May 30, 2020 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen called for timely preparedness to curtail spread of coronavirus might be triggered by flooding during upcoming rainy season.
Addressing the 7th ordinary session of River Basin High Council through virtual technology, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen urged officials in vulnerable tributaries to complete their flooding preparedness to tackle the spread of coronavirus in connection with high risk of flooding.
Chairperson of the River Basin High Council, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke also stressed timely identification of high risk areas in line with ensuring flooding preparedness thereby preventing transmission of the pandemic effectively.
Improving dam administration competence, Building preventive capacity is crucial besides creating awareness among the community regarding flooding and related risks faced by the county, according to Demeke.
Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Engineer Sileshi Bekele, to his part, said river water flow management works and renovation of riverbank flooding preventive dikes have been conducted to protect hazards that might be triggered by heavy rains.
The high council finally put directives that will be executed jointly with regional bodies to prevent spread of the virus due to flooding.
