Deputy PM says resolution 97 impedes cooperation, harms U.S.’s long-term interests
Addis Ababa, June 19, 2021 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, in an article he sent to EPA, said “As the U.S. Senate Resolution 97 is a matter of concern to Ethiopians and the country’s leadership, it should be of equal concern to the Whitehouse, State Department, and other executive branches for it hinders opportunities to advance the U.S.A.’s long-term interests in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.”
The remark was given by Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen in his article sent to The Ethiopian Herald. The Deputy Premier added that the resolution is unhelpful to seek a lasting solution.
He also underscored that the relations between Ethiopia and the U.S. need to take a path of serving common interest, fostering bilateral relations and dealing with collective global challenges.
Other approaches such as threats of sanctions or any punitive measures would seriously harm the US interest and undermine its credibility in the Horn of Africa, he added.
Improving overall governance and resolving conflicts can come about through collaborative relationships not punitive measures or threats of sanctions-targeted or otherwise, he said.
He also underlined as what Ethiopia needs from its traditional development partners such as the U.S.A. is enhanced, expanded and robust financial, technical, diplomatic, and political supports
