Deputy PM calls on international community to support government’s efforts in rebuilding Tigray

Addis Ababa, July 2, 2021 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen has briefed resident Ambassadors of several countries in Addis Ababa on the unilateral ceasefire the government has recently declared in Tigray region and other issues related to latest developments in the country.

On the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister recollected the major pushing factors that led the federal government to declare law enforcement operation in Tigray with regard to atrocities TPLF Junta committed against the nation.

The government has fully achieved the goals of the law enforcement that had been concluded with in short period of time, the Demeke explained.

The federal government started the rebuilding and rehabilitation activities in the region immediately after the law enforcement operation had been completed, he said.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the unilateral ceasefire enables farmers to conduct agricultural practices without any security threat and creates peaceful environment for humanitarian actors willing to operate in the region. He elaborated that the terrorist group has still been hindering humanitarian activities.

Saying that the government had reconstructed and repaired infrastructures damaged by the terrorist group such as banking and telecom sevices, the Deputy Prime Minister adding that the Junta is continuing attacking infrastructures.

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (​OHCHR) has been undertaking investigations into human rights abuses allegedly committed during the law enforcement operation.

He said the government will not tolerate any belligerent acts of the TPLF Junta that tend to violate the unilateral ceasefire.

The Deputy Prime Minister further called up on the international community to contribute support to the ongoing efforts of the government to rebuild the region and rehabilitee affected people in the area.
