Demonstrators in Amhara region urge armed groups to embrace path of peace

Addis Ababa, December 18, 2024 (FMC) – The demonstrators in Amhara region of Ethiopia have called upon armed groups and instigators to embrace the path of peace to make the region a center of development and durable stability.

Thousands of people in various cities and towns of Amhara region have staged rallies in support of the government’s peace call in the region.

In the early hours of this morning, several cities including the regional capital Bihar Dar as well as other major cities like Debre-Markos, Dessie, Kombolcha, Sekota, Debre-Tabor and many other places witnessed widespread public rallies calling for immediate peace by ending the ongoing conflict.

These gatherings brought together a diverse cross-section of the community, including religious leaders, educators, elders, children, and women, and many other sections of the people.

The demonstrators have also praised the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and the regional security forces and affirmed their solidarity in the efforts of ensuring lasting peace.

“We honor the sacrifice of our defense forces, federal forces, and regional security forces who have paid the price,” the demonstrators said.

They have also pledged to support the government’s actions aimed at fostering peace.

Recall that the government of Ethiopia has repeatedly called on armed forces to embrace peaceful approach to solve differences.

As part of its determination, the government has been creating an enabling environment for a nationwide reconciliation that would eventually nurture a civilized political narrative in the East African nation.

The recent peace agreement with the Oromia region and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) exemplifies Ethiopia’s determination to achieve lasting stability. And these initiatives represent concrete and decisive actions by the Ethiopian government to fortify stability across the nation.

Similarly, demonstrators in the Amhara region today demanded the same peace venture that would ensure development and durable peace in the region.

“What our region needs now is not war but peace and development,” the inhabitants of the region underscored.

Acknowledging peace as a shared wealth, the demonstrators further stressed the need for cultivating and protecting it together.

“The government must safeguard the peace and security of citizens by upholding the law. We will support the government’s efforts to maintain peace,” they further underscored.

The demonstrators have also called upon armed groups, whom they allegedly refer them as extremists and instigators, to leave foreign influences and embrace the path of peace.

“We will reiterate the government’s repeated calls for peace. To make our region a center of peace and development, we will all stand for peace,” they said.

It has repeatedly proven its commitment for national consensus through the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission by confronting a complex history of conflict to establish long-term stability.
