Council of Ministers decides to declare state of emergency in Amhara Region
Addis Ababa, August 4, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers, during its 23rd Regular Session, has decided to declare a state of emergency in the Amhara Regional State.
The Council stated that the state of emergency has become necessary to control the armed conflict and ensure peace and security in the region.
The Council noted that the government made repeatedly called on the armed forces in the region to pursue the path to legal and peaceful mechanisms. Armed forces posed a threat to political, social and economic activities in the region, according to the Council.
The Council has also approved the draft proclamation to establish Addis Ababa as autonomous university as part of the efforts underway to ensure academic and administrative freedom of the institution. The decision to make Addis Ababa University an autonomous institution is said a milestone for the ongoing reforms in the education sector.
The establishment proclamation will be enacted as soon as it is published on the Federal Negarit Gazeta.
