Conferences on the establishment of Central Ethiopia, Southern Ethiopia Regions underway
Addis Ababa, August 18, 2023 (FBC) – The Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) Region is holding its 3rd Year 6th round 2nd emergency session in Wolkite town to reestablish itself as Central Ethiopia Region.
The two day conference is expected to discuss on and approve the draft proclamation to regulate powers and functions of the executive bodies of Central Ethiopia Region and documents related to the amendment of the regional constitution.
The information from SNNP Region Communication Bureau indicates that various appointments will be announced and the existing region will be reestablished as Central Ethiopia Region.
Likewise, the conference on the establishment of Southern Ethiopia Region based on referendum made by six zones and five special districts is underway in Arba Minch town.
The conference has already approved regional draft constitution with majority vote, 10 against and 2 abstentions. Amharic has been made a working language of the new region as per the regional constitution which also allows development of other languages in the region. As to the constitution, Wolaita Sodo town has been assigned as seat of the regional government.
And regional offices will be apportioned to other towns including Sodo, Arba Minch, Dilla, Jinka, Sawla and Konso Karat.
