Commission working to provide humanitarian aid to 1.8m people in Tigray
Addis Ababa, December 18, 2020 (FBC) –The National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) said it is working to deliver humanitarian assistance to more than 1.8 million people in Tigray regional state.
NDRMC Commissioner, Mitiku Kassa, told FBC that the government has now diverted its attention towards providing humanitarian assistance following the end of the law enforcement operation in the regional state.
The Government is currently purchasing 10 million quintals of wheat to avoid shortage of resources in Tigray regional state and other parts of the country, he said.
The humanitarian aid which arrived in Mekelle city will also be distributed to residents in Adigrat and its environs, he said, adding relief aid sent to Shire also covers areas from Axum up to Adawa to Shiraro and its environs, he added.
The Commissioner further said the humanitarian aid which arrived in Alamata will be distributed to the residents in Korem, Chercher, Mehoni and other surrounding areas.
The Commission is providing the assistance not only in Tigray but also in other areas affected by desert locust invasion, floods, conflicts and other related problems, the Commissioner said.
