Coalition of Inter-Religion, Elders Councils says peace in Metekel critical to safeguard GERD
Addis Ababa, January 8, 2021 (FBC) – Coalition of Ethiopian Inter-Religious and Elders Councils discussed with community representatives of Benshangul Gumuz Region in Asosa town aimed at seeking solution to conflict in Metekel zone.
During the meeting, Athlete Haile Gebreselassie who represented the Council of Elders stressed that Benshangul Gumuz Region is location of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) through which Ethiopians have left behind their legacy to generations.
Benshangul Gumuz is a region in which the renaissance journey of Ethiopia started, Haile Gebreselassie said, adding that communal violences which occurred in region were intended to disrupt construction process of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The coalition urged leaders at all levels to protect civilians and the media refrain from spreading information that escalates conflict. Maintaining Peace in Benshangul Gumuz region is critical to safeguard the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) from any potential risk, according to the coalition.
Deputy Chairperson of the Coalition, Professor Mesfin Araya to his part said Benshangul Gumuz has got attention from the world community owning to GERD, adding that the completion of the dam will change narratives of the region in many socio economic aspects.
He elaborated that the conflicts in the region are aimed to hinder the community from benefiting the development activities in the region including the dam project calling religious leaders, parents, schools and government bodies to join hands for peace and stability in the area.
Patron of the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia and President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Grand Mufti Haji Oumer Idris stressed need to protect dignity of human beings. Grand Mufti said that he understood status of the conflict in the region reiterating commitment of the council to help government take problem solving measure accordingly.
