Chinese ophthalmologists performing free cataract surgery to Ethiopian patients

Addis Ababa, January 3, 2025 (FMC) – “Bright Journey” Project of Cataract Surgery in Ethiopia was launched at Tirunesh-Beijing General Hospital in Addis Ababa today. Under the project, a team of Chinese ophthalmologists, in collaboration with Trunesh-Beijing General Hospital, started free cataract surgery to Ethiopian patients

On the occasion, “Ethiopia Brightness” initiative launch and medical aid donation worth 40 million birr handover ceremony was also held in the presence of Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Dhaba, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai, the President of Tianjin Eye Hospital Mr. Zhang Wei, officials and experts of the field as well as beneficiaries of the initiative. The Chinese team handed over medical equipment and supplies to Tirunesh-Beijing General Hospital.

The project represents a significant example of healthcare diplomacy in action, it was learned.

In the past few days, Chinese doctors have performed free cataract surgeries for 80 Ethiopian patients, helping restore their sight and improve their quality of life.

Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes stated that the initiative is set to benefit 500 Ethiopians, extending gratitude to the Chinese delegation.

By addressing cataracts, a leading cause of blindness in Ethiopia, “Bright Journey” meets a critical health need while solidifying the partnership between the two nations, it was indicated.

Tirunesh-Beijing General Hospital, a symbol of Chinese-Ethiopian cooperation since 2012, is said to be the ideal setting for this initiative. Serving Addis Ababa and neighboring areas, the hospital has become a vital healthcare hub. Hosting this project reinforces its role in providing accessible, high-quality care to those in need.

The initiative also focuses on sustainability, involving local medical personnel in the surgeries to ensure skills transfer and capacity building. This dual focus on immediate relief and long-term impact exemplifies the broader goals of healthcare diplomacy.

While not groundbreaking in its concept, “Bright Journey” underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing global health challenges. By improving lives and fostering goodwill, it demonstrates how healthcare can serve as a bridge between nations, reinforcing mutual respect and cooperation.

The “Bright Journey” Project is said to be a new achievement of the Partnership Action for Health between China and Africa.
